THOR: GREATEST HITS

UPDATE: The Thor movie rocks!!! Don't miss it!With today's international release (next week in the USA) of the first-ever THOR movie, I've decided to showcase Alex's most important work with the character.
Alex Ross has placed Thor in many remarkable group shots for posters and lithographs but seldom by himself. So here are Thor's Greatest Hits by Alex Ross.

Left to right: Earth X #5, where he transformed the god of thunder into a "goddess"; Ragnarok #1-2 - A Paradise X special, where we can see Alex's Kirby-esque rendition of Asgard; the life-size bust designed by Alex and sculpted by Lou Cella, this bust was later released in a more affordable "mini" version; and finally, the upcoming direct-to-DVD, animated Thor movie cover with a young Thor making his He-Man impression.
Do you have a favorite image of Thor by Alex Ross? lemme know in the comments section on this website or facebook page or tweet me your opinion.

NEWS: KIRBY - GENESIS #1 ARRIVES IN JUNE!

Official Press Release
KIRBY: GENESIS #1, THE SPECTACULAR NEW SERIES FROM ROSS AND BUSIEK, ARRIVES IN JUNE 2011!

April 28, 2011, Runnemede, NJ - After May's Kirby: Genesis #0 primer, the acclaimed Marvels Team, Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek, reunite for Kirby: Genesis #1 set for a June 2011 release! Kirby: Genesis #1 features six "dynamite" covers which include three astounding covers by Alex Ross, as well as covers from Ryan Sook, Paul Renaud, and Dale Keown! All the pieces are in place for this surefire-hit of 2011, featuring creations from the legendary artist Jack Kirby!

Kirby: Genesis #1 Superstars Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek bring Jack "King" Kirby's creations to life in a way you'll never forget! "Tired of the same old annual company crossover event," says artist and co-plotter Alex Ross. "Try out Kirby: Genesis for an all-new, all-different universe!"

Kirby: Genesis explodes into action with June's issue #1! A message to space has been heard and answered -- but what has come to Earth isn't what anyone would expect! As cosmic visitors begin to be revealed to the world, a deadly battle begins -- and three ordinary people are caught up in it. Featuring: Captain Victory, Silver Star, the Glory Knights and more! This is the beginning! This is the GENESIS! "Getting to work with all these great Kirby concepts is an amazing thrill," says writer Kurt Busiek. "Especially since some of them have never been seen in print before!"

"Alex is so excited about the project that he wants to work hand in hand with Jack to paint as many interior pages as possible, which thrilled us all to no end," says Dynamite President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Having Kurt and Alex together again collaborating on one of Dynamite's most important projects to date is nothing short of amazing."

"Kurt and Alex have done an AMAZING job of taking these seemingly disparate characters and concepts and creating a cohesive, living, breathing universe," says Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt. "Miss this at your peril."

JUST ARRIVED: JINGLE BELLE #2

Although it's a little early for Christmas, I was able to get this Holiday treat for only 99 cents. It's the variant cover to Jingle Belle #2 created by Paul Dini, it tells the story of Santa Claus' rebellious and mischievous teenage daughter. This cover actually comes on the flip side of the original cover so, it isn't a "real" variant cover that comes separated from the regular one.
This cover came out in 1999, check out what other covers came out that year, HERE

INSPIRATIONS: GERMAN INDUSTRIAL MUSIC

The cover for the album Kapital by german, industrial band Laibach was Alex Ross' inspiration for the cover of 4: A Universe X Special. Apparently, Alex is a big fan of this band, he even named the Kingdom Come character Von Bach after the band and modeled said character after the lead singer.
I always thought this was a rather odd cover, nothing like Alex's work, now we all know where it all comes from.

INSPIRATIONS: VAMPIRES!

http://www.alexrosscollector.com/2008/09/newspapers.htmlThis new section will illustrate you on the many things that inspire or may do so while Alex Ross is crafting one of his masterpieces.
The piece on the right called Sucking Democracy Dry which includes former U.S. President George W. Bush as a vampire and that appeared in New York newspaper The Village Voice might have been inspired on the countless classic vampire movies from yesterday, most likely this timeless image of Bela Lugosi and his "friend".

BEST ALEX ROSS COVER?!?

Art Website PSD TUTS+ has chosen what they think are the Coolest Comic Book Covers of All Time and they've chosen the cover on the LEFT as Alex Ross' contribution to the list.
I beg to differ!
As far as Batman covers go it IS great although I prefer the one on the RIGHT. But after everything Alex has done for Marvel, DC, Dynamite and others, there should be so many other covers in there from Marvels to Justice and The Last Phantom. Which do you consider Alex's best cover? Sound off in the comments here, on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks to our friend Graeme for pointing me towards this list.
