CONSUMER REPORT

Here at The Alex Ross Collector, we want you to keep collecting art and keep your collection growing. But in this time of global economic crisis and nagging wives (not you, honey) I've decided to help you shop smartly.
I originally wanted to show how you can buy Alex Ross stuff cheap, but my pal and frequent collaborator Jeremy, was angry the other day with people who sell things things at inflated prices for no apparent reason, so we'll kill two birds with one stone and address that issue as well.

EXAMPLE #1: The very same lithograph, which was originally a Wizard cover, is sold for two extremely different prices. Why? seller on the left sells this FRAMED. So basically you're buying an expensive frame that comes with an art by some guy Alex Ross stuck in the middle. WTF?!?

EXAMPLE #2: This Conan litho is NOT framed, seller on the left, claims it's very limited and stuff like that, then WHY do they still have so many units of it at the Dynamic Forces site?

EXAMPLE #3: This is something I actually bought. One seller lists it for nearly US$50 claiming it is still shrink-wrapped and everything and that's a GOOD thing and all but I bought the same one unwrapped, yeah but in perfect condition for 3 BUCKS!!!
Come on sellers, you DO want to sell, right? if you don't know how much something is worth, browse around eBay or drop me a line and I'll help you, my e-mail is at the top of the page and I answer all my e-mails unless they're completely unintelligible, stupid or rude. Will it kill ya' to say please, people?

EXAMPLE #4: Even expensive and hard to find stuff like the Kingdom Come Slipcase edition can be found rather cheap. I bought this book which normally sells for $150 to $250 for only $65.
So the lesson here as a buyer is NOT to rush to buy something the first time you see it, browse around and find a better price, play the waiting game until something cheap shows up. And sellers, please get real with those prices otherwise you're not gonna sell anything. Unless that's your intention from the get-go to raise prices so items wouldn't sell and fool the "missus" and keep your precious art; then we can all relate. wink-wink

ICv2.com has just published an interview with Alex Ross about his upcoming work in Kirby: Genesis in which he clarifies what his involvement is in the interior art of this series:
"There are some characters in the story that will be painted every time they appear. This has necessitated some full pages as well as select panels to illustrate them in. Various other moments have included some introductory shots of key characters that I’ve illustrated."

NEWS: MUSEUM EXHIBITION ON ALEX ROSS

Heroes and Villains: The Comic Book Art of Alex Ross
The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh
October 1, 2011 to January 8, 2012

Heroes and Villains will include over 100 artworks by Alex Ross, in addition to works by Andy Warhol and Norman Rockwell. This exhibition, curated by The Warhol's Director of Exhibitions, Jesse Kowalski, celebrates the strong influences of Rockwell, Warhol, Andrew Loomis, and Ross’ mother Lynette (a successful commercial illustrator in her own right), and outlines Ross’ career of redefining comic books and graphic novels to a new generation through paintings, sketches, and sculptures of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and other comic book superheroes. This exhibition, which comprises 5,500 square feet of gallery space, will be the first museum exhibition of Ross’ work. Ross has graciously offered to prepare an original artwork for The Warhol to promote this premier, which will be available to the public in poster form exclusively at The Warhol Store (www.warholstore.com). Ross will be on hand for the opening celebration on October 1, 2011. In addition, Warhol’s uncompleted film Batman/Dracula (1964), which has not been exhibited since 1964, will be included in the exhibition.

Special thanks to Mr. Jesse Kowalski for putting together such a wonderful exhibition and for believing in this site to help promote it. If you're in the Pittsburgh area, make sure you drop by, heck I'm not in the area and I'm trying to get there, this will be like Mecca for all collectors like myself.

NEWS: ROSS & BUSIEK INTERVIEW

Lucas Siegel from Newsarama.com had an interview with Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross on the topic of their upcoming Kirby: Genesis series. About merging his style with Jack Kirby's, Alex said:

Whereas I’m not specifically aping Jack’s form of figure drawing, a lot of my thinking is to interpret his designs and poses into my particular filter of trying to make that look more photorealistic. Everything I draw from Jack’s designs is heavily based on examining each way he draws a face, a nose, a fold in cloth, textures, everything.
