Hey guys! let's do something fun! My friend and frequent collaborator on this blog, Jeremy suggested this topic. It's my Top Ten posters by Alex Ross. I'd also like to know your picks! so tell me in the comments section and let's start a friendly discussion.
Here are mine in no particular order:
1. Earth X poster: A complete story told in mural form. Priceless!
2. Crisis on Infinite Earths poster: One mural, one massive story and 562 characters telling it. It'll never get any better than this.
3. Captain America "Origin" poster: Only Alex can tell Cap's story in such a dynamic way and using the flag as a template, nonetheless.
4. Alex Ross' X-Men "Wizard" poster: Cool designs that weren't accepted by Marvel. Love 'em! Too bad it's a mini-poster.
5. JLA "Wizard" poster: Another mini-poster yet it's larger than life, the characters, the composition, the colors, the poses it's awe-inspiring.
6. 74th Academy Awards poster: The perfect combination of the things I love, movies, the Oscars, superheroes and Alex Ross' art.
7. Kingdom Come "Flying Heroes" poster: That's the most perfect sunset ever painted!
8. Batman Beyond: Such a cool composition, it gives me goosebumps!
9. Supreme family poster: You have no idea how many "wows" this poster gets and nobody, not even myself, knows who all these characters are. It's THAT iconic.
10. Spider-Man & Spider-Woman "Upper Deck" poster: Always had a soft spot (and the hots) for Spider-Woman while watching her cartoon show when I was a kid and now check out the hot-as-hell body Alex gives her! 'Nuff said!

nICE CHOICES...
1)Heroes litho - http://bit.ly/3aSEDc
2)Villains litho - http://bit.ly/3wuD2H
The two above lithos are some of the earliest in my collection and I think stand up to the test of time. Some of the features aren't as articulated as much as Alex' later work but I love Spidey and Cap along with the Skull with the Luger and the Flaming Dude (can't remember his name...any help on that?)...I also dig Doc Ock's tentacles ominously snaking through the scene.
3)Submariner litho -- I dig the colors and how he captured average guy Bill Everett juxtaposed with heroic Submariner bursting from page. (I think he copied this later for an Astro City cover with a guy over a typewriter.)
4)Cap - Kirby recreation - http://bit.ly/xOQmD
I used to hate this lithograph but I also used to hate Kirby's art (blasphemy!). I like the simplicity and color and always appreciate how Alex doesn't bury the original artist's style but only enhances it (such as his Crisis poster, his take on Neal Adams' Superman on the cover of Comic Book Artist among others - now that shoulda been a poster!)
5)Amazing Fantasy 15 poster - Another poster i have fondness for only because it was one of the earliest I have. I always love when Alex does Spidey (Love his recent spotlight poster)... It is rather dynamic. I don't usually like purples in pictures but this one grew on me. Still, early work but I dig!
6)Batman War on Crime promo poster - http://bit.ly/tIejY
Batman's face...just pissed off. This poster works for me simply because it was a HUGE promo poster and I have it matted and framed in a sleek black metal poster. I always thought the face he used for Batman on this looked a little like Chris Meloni from Special Victims Unit, especially the eyes and mouth. I am not sure who he uses for Batman's face.
7)Marvels Litho/Poster - http://bit.ly/Ckcp9 - another one I used to hate. I have it laminated on my wall and it brings out the colors (couldn't afford the $200 frame). The art is from his early days but still gives you a lot of bang for your buck. I like how three colors are seen. Bluish at the top, hot red/orange through the middle, and then green/yellow at bottom.
8)Marvel Universe - The 70s - http://bit.ly/Z9hTY
Just love the bursting kinetic energy and Captain Marvel flying out and all the cheesy characters. I am waiting to get a house and get this baby matted/framed for the basement. This is one of my favorites due to it's quirkiness and sheer obscurity of some characters and suit designs for the time. It is a time capsule image.
9)DC Universe Poster - (can't find image) -- This poster is probably hated by everyone. I only like it because it was my first Alex Ross poster...and also like the brooding pissed off (again) Batman in the lower right. I like it specifically for the same reasons it is hated - it captures a marketing moment in DC's history...Superman with long hair...Steel...WTF? Anyway...this is my bogie choice.
10)JLA Secret Origins poster - http://bit.ly/R5IrH
I like Superman's look here...and the triangular posing pulling the eye upward.
Superman 5 card set (taking off used in the lenticular cover) -- closest image i can find - http://bit.ly/1NpBHa
(also cool was the 5 set promos of Batman in the spotlight also used in lenticular cover)
*******
I suggest that all the fans of Alexrosscollector.com get on the horn with DC and Marvel and flood them with emails of what we truly want (insert Alex picture of choice) as a poster/litho! I mean some may like the Cap 600 poster that came out but there is sooooo much more of his stuff out there more demanding of a lithograph or $8 poster. Sure not all of us have deep pockets but you can sometimes tell DC or Marvel are cranking out his covers for $$...(though there is no complaint on the recent Superman/floating in air and Batman/RIP posters done)....I am not sure how many folks visit this wonderful blog done by Alex Avila but I would love for it to be tons and us tons have a voice with DC/Marvel/etc. (gets off soapbox)
I am in awe of your knowledge of Alex's work. Imagine the research that he also must do.
Following are things that I want on my wall. I know some are already available, but others aren't, and others are just beyond my current budget (grin)...
1. The fold-out cover to Absolute Kingdom Come, where Superman stands at the head of a crowded table
2. The original wraparound covers to Kingdom Come, together on one long sheet
3. The Crisis poster, where Alex collaborated with George Perez
4. World's Finest (Batman and Superman on the move, seen from below)
5. Classic Justice League portrait of Alan Scott as GL (just a personal favourite)
6. Justice Society: "Generations" (the fold-out cover to #26, although Capt. Marvel has an odd expression)
7. Earth X Captain America (magnificent design of scarred, aging Steve Rogers wearing a tattered flag, but not one single iconic image as far as I know, although we get a taste on the front of Earth X Sketchbook)
8. Kingdom Come Bruce Wayne (terrific design, but again, not a single iconic image that I can find)
9. The Legion of Superheroes in the sky on the last page of Justice Society #22 (those last incredible panels screamed for context, leaving hope for future followup)
10. The origin of Captain America
I agree with a lot of the choices that you guys already made. Alex has done a great job with so many projects...
Brgds
The Crisis poster is great, is my favorite, take care!
